Counselling |
Following a road trauma incident, people who have been involved directly, or indirectly, will experience a variety of physical and/or emotional reactions. There is no set pattern or length of time for these reactions to occur, or to be resolved, and the severity and frequency of symptoms may vary greatly in individuals. The time span may be a few days, a few months, or a number of years in the absence of early emotional support and counselling. Not all reactions are easily recognisable, although you may feel that something is not quite right. Some people are able to identify and share their emotions, while others find either or both these tasks difficult. Friends, close associates and employers need to be aware that, although on the surface people appear to be coping, other symptoms may be apparent in the attitude and/or behaviour of those involved. If you are concerned about how you, (or a friend, relative or workmate), are coping after a road trauma incident, click on this link to download a PDF* document that lists some of the more common symptoms that might be experienced and some recommended coping strategies. Some of these symptoms are also common to other illnesses, physical as well as emotional, so it's a good idea to have a check-up with your doctor to ensure that you do not have an underlying medical condition that is contributing to your distress.
